Drink collagen? Did I read that right? Isn't collagen the substance people inject into their skin? Why would I want to drink collagen?
Let us explain.
Collagen is a smooth, structural protein found within the fibrous connective tissues of our body (also known as cartilage), including our skin, hair, nails, joints, bones, tendons, ligaments, gut, blood vessels, and organs. Its purpose is to provide strength and elasticity to our connective tissue to enable the proper strength and functioning of our bodies.
Let's break this down a bit more.
Your connective tissues are comprised of bundles of these collagen fibers. These fibers provide the strength, support, elasticity, and stability that your connective tissues need to stay strong. It essentially provides durability to keep these tissues intact, and prevent tearing from the structures to which our connective tissues are attached (hence why collagen is important to athletes, and individuals who exercise frequently).
By the time we hit our mid-20's, our collagen production begins to naturally decline. This means that the body is not reproducing enough collagen on its own to combat the natural effects of aging of these connective tissues. This is seen aesthetically, such as with the wrinkling of skin, and physiological effects such as sore joints or tendons, or decreased range of mobility.
In contrast to common theory, collagen generally can't be absorbed via creams, gels, or topical products due to its relatively large particle size and molecular density. A natural collagen particle is too large to penetrate the dermis, or skin's barrier. In order to effectively absorb the collagen within the body and reap the benefits, collagen would need to be administered via injection, or ingested orally in the form of a food supplement. We personally recommend the latter, as drinking collagen offers a simple and far less invasive method of acquiring the benefits of collagen.
There are several different types of collagen composed by the body. The most abundant, and arguably most important, form of collagen, is type I collagen. Type I collagen accounts for nearly 70% of the body's total collagen makeup, and over 90% of the collagen in our skin, hair, and nails. Type III is the second most common type of collagen (under 30% of the body's collagen), generally responsible strength and elasticity of our reticular tissue (found in our kidneys, bones, liver, and lymphatic system). The lesser found Type II collagen accounts for the collagen in our ligaments. Type IV, and V, constitute for small portions of our remaining bodily collagen, and are less commonly sourced.
Derived from animals (such as ourselves), the type of collagen found varies by animal. For example, collagen is typically abundantly found in bovine (beef - I + III), marine (fish - I), porcine (pig - III), and on occasion chicken (which accounts for the less common type II collagen).
Studies have shown that marine collagen is not only the highest quality form of collagen, but that it also has the greatest bioavailability by the body, at 1.5 times that of the also popular bovine collagen; this means optimal absorption by the body in order for it to be digested properly and function effectively. Marine collagen is usually considered the cleanest and safest form of collagen consumption.
After conducting much of our initial research, and calling a number of the original bovine collagen manufacturers (yes, down to the original sources, guys), we defeatedly discovered most collagen powders labeled "100% grass-fed" are actually not entirely grass-fed, but are not held to any FDA regulations that prevent them from running with this claim.
Opting for marine collagen means that there is absolutely no risk of Mad Cow Disease, should that ever be an issue. FDA regulations on health supplements are much looser than those on food, so it always pays to do your research. Furthermore, marine collagen is composed primarily of type I collagen, which if you recall earlier, comprises about 70% of the body's collagen. It's largely responsible for anti-aging qualities, as well as the general appearance of your skin, hair, and nails, so if your goal is to improve your skin longevity, we highly suggest opting for a marine collagen powder.
For health conscious individuals interested in a clean, safe, and science-backed collagen supplement, our Premium Marine Collagen Powder will not disappoint. We are one of the few companies to use a low molecular weight marine collagen, which is probably the most important factor when it comes to ability to for the body to actually digest, absorb, and utilize the collagen peptides.
We proudly operate under an authentically natural and organic policy, as all of our ingredients are organic and/or natural, and sourced directly from the country of origin (while sourcing in China is much cheaper, it is, however, less reliable in terms of ensuring purity and cleanliness, as regulations are quite a bit looser overseas).
We safely source our hydrolyzed marine collagen directly from the North Atlantic Canadian waters, and our vitamin C is derived from organic Peruvian camu camu, one of the naturally richest fruit forms of vitamin C at 60x that of an orange and full of super beneficial antioxidants! (Note that vitamin C is crucial to collagen production and absorption in the body.)
We are 100% free of additives, artificial ingredients, preservatives, added sugars, and emulsifiers, and we triple test our formula and ingredients by three different FDA and NSF-certified thirty party labs for purity and quality assurance.
